"If you're going to San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie

In February, Ivor and I hopped on a plane from Melbourne to to the Golden State City. It was our first location on our month long trip to America (cue U.S.A chant).

The 14 hour economy class flight was made bearable with some great midnight snacks, a few good movies and a shoulder to sleep on. By the time we knew it, we were already climbing the hills San Francisco calls their footpaths, eating lunch at Nob Hill Café and having an incredibly stressful time figuring out how tipping works. It was not until mid-way through our trip we got it down pat.

On our second day, I awoke to a delivery of chocolate covered fruit and a birthday balloon from a dear friend. On this day, I marked the end of my teens years at the Oyster Depot (amazing seafood), Fisherman's Wharf (there is seals there, do I need to say more?) and the Foreign Cinema restaurant, which was showing Signing in the Rain that night (and also had free tampons in the female bathrooms, why don't all bathrooms have this?!). All these places provided a great introduction to the coast, cuisine and culture of the city.

The next morning we were greeted with beautiful Californian weather, got onto a bus (after missing it twice #rookiemistakes) and travelled down to Land's End. Our day involved a 6km trail and a very unfit me, peanut butter sandwiches and beautiful views of  the coast and the Golden Gate Bridge. I would definitely recommend bringing some sandwiches and a good quality camera to enjoy and remember these sights.

On our last day before we joined our G-Adventures tour group we visited Alcatraz and did an audio tour of the Island. It was incredibly interesting to hear the history behind the prison, whilst being immersed into the environment, even the cracks on the ground had a significance (hint bombs). Additionally, the views of San Francisco's skyline from the Island were amazing. After we got back from the Island, a man on the street jumped out some bushes and yelled out as a joke,  it scared the shit out of me but it was pretty fucking hilarious.

Whilst, I absolutely hated walking through the hills of San Francisco, it is a beautiful city. I do have to say it's hilly nature really adds to its uniquely adorable aesthetic, where pastel coloured townhouses meets the sea.

Let me know in the comments if you have been to San Francisco and your thoughts on the city.
